Porn Is Not Evil

I was reading the news today, as I am wont to do, and came across a wonderful bit of schadenfreude and a strange bit of a pisser: Josh Duggar is checking himself into rehab.

Now, it’s schadenfreude because, hey, the holy man was caught with his pants down and his dick in God only knows how many women over the years.  Normally people’s affairs are, and should remain, their own issue.  Personally I think if you’re going to screw around on your wife you should consider getting a divorce, but to each their own.  Josh was the poster boy for the conservative Christian movement: a fine, upstanding young man who was struggling to keep his purity in a hostile world.  And while he railing against the sins of the world and collapse of morality he had two accounts on Ashley Madison, at least one extra Facebook account that he was using to woo strippers, and was fucking a lot of women who were not his wife.

So what, right?  It’s not really any concern of mine when yet another fine, upstanding young man gets caught with women who aren’t his wife.  I think he’s a chickenshit liar and a deceitful piece of human refuse, but that just means he’s got a solid groundwork for a career in politics.

What pisses me off about the whole situation is Josh, his weird-ass family, and the media are trying to tie together two things that really don’t have anything to do with each other.  The article I read (you can check it here, if it’s still up when you read this)  stated Josh was:

Viewing pornography and being unfaithful.

Stop for a moment and think about the underlying rhetoric.  I suspect, by the way, the rhetoric is coming from the Duggar family itself.  What they’re doing is equating viewing pornography with being unfaithful to your spouse.  They’re not claiming the two are the same thing, they’re claiming viewing pornography is as bad as being unfaithful to your spouse and, in a ham-fisted kind of way, beginning to set up the eventual excuse and rebirth of Josh Duggar as a fine, upstanding young man.

Mark my words: when Josh gets out of rehab he’ll point the stark finger of blame directly at pornography and claim, in much the same way people claim marijuana is a gateway drug, that pornography pushed him into screwing around on his wife.  Once that happens his journey to true assholedom will be complete: he’ll effectively have pushed the blame away from himself and will be able to go on his merry way without ever having acknowledge that he was still in charge of his dick when it slid into all those willing women.

It wasn’t him.  It was the porn.

He’ll likely also start up a new campaign to censor or end pornography.  Josh will be able to provide first-hand examples of the ills of porn and just how much damage it did to his family.  Now, I don’t have much of a dog in that fight, but it could be argued that writing erotica is almost as bad as porn.  Besides, I don’t like to see things censored just because some folk can’t control themselves.

A corollary to this will be the favorite conservative Christian subtext that the women in porn were really the ones responsible for the whole thing.  After all, if they would cover themselves up then fine, upstanding men like Josh Duggar wouldn’t be tempted into sin.  Because, gee, it was Eve that tempted Adam, wasn’t it?  In their world men simply cannot control their instincts when a woman flashes her sexy ankles and because they can’t control themselves it’s obviously the woman’s fault.  Conveniently, this has also been used as an excuse for rape.

This, by the way, is the same reasoning that lead to burqas.

To all those idiots, I say this: If you can’t look at this picture without wanting to cheat on your wife, you might not be much of a man.

So, there you have it, Josh.  You’re a sad little person and I think it’s best if you turn in your man card.

It’s an age old issue to blame the weakness of “man” on outside influences, AIDS was blamed on the gay community, pornography, regardless of the degree is seen as the root of all evil, people who enjoy the adult baby scene are often seen as potential paedophiles. Rather that look at the cause and the desires of individuals or groups it’s easier to blame what we don’t understand. If people hate porn then the answer is simple, don’t look, if you don’t want to pay for sex, don’t. It’s much like religion, we don’t all believe in the same deity, if any at all but we should respect that choice and the same for pornography, as long as it’s legal then live and let live. As for your comment about the picture, no I don’t want to cheat on my wife with her but that’s a matter of choice and likes.

Exactly! It’s unfortunate that what two (or more) consenting adults decide to do has so much shame attached to it. Then other people come along and use that shame as a club to get rid of something they don’t care for or can’t handle. You responded to the picture exactly as any grown-up should, you made a choice. I’m pretty sure Duggar’s going to come back and say he didn’t have a choice, that porn warped him and it’s really porn’s fault so we should abolish it because he can’t handle temptation. Others will get on board because they’re terrified of their own desires.

Like the majority I subscribe to the idea that is it’s safe, legal and above all consensual then who am I or anyone else to point the finger and say NO, there are many things that I dislike but that’s life.

I have noted that many also try to censor “erotic writing” which I find amusing, if you recall De-Sade was locked away for his writings and yet the establishment that kept him “secluded” sold his writings after his death and kept the money, sadly nothing has changed.

Yeah, I’m kind of wondering about that. Amazon has already cracked down on some authors and some covers. It’s only a matter of time before erotica gets important enough to start censoring.

There are a couple of blog authors I follow and they said that they have had to modify their covers and description on Amazon, as you say it probably won’t be long before companies such as Amazon and Smashword ban certain types of writing. They’ll be burning book in the market squares next, opps that’s been done 😕

I think Amazon likes money too much to outright ban erotica, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they put it behind a wall or something so as not to offend the weak people out there. They kind of do this already when they put things in the adult dungeon (for reasons) but I could see there coming a time when you have to go to a specific part of their site to find erotica.

Indeed and we should enjoy it, not blame all our problems on it. I think a lot of our problems stem from not admitting we like sex.
